Not Even Lara Croft Can Save You

Ah well, I should have just enough time to put together work foods and get cleaned up to get in when I want to, as long as I don't start internetting.

Man, I'd forgotten how awful the music video version of that was.  Ah, well.

God Save Donald Duck, Vaudeville and Variety

The long march towards progress begins.  Someone recently asked me if I wasn't still on Nutrisystem, and I jokingly responded "sort of, I'm undergoing lifestyle change".

Weight:   284.2 lbs
Body Fat: 38.4%
Water:    47.2%

Mostly a joke, but not entirely.  I had a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast yesterday, a small turkey and bacon (I feel I may have been shorted on the bacon) sandwich for lunch, and another bagel and cream cheese at around 4 or so.  This is hardly the healthiest day I've had, but it's reasonable and not exactly unhealthy.  Certainly a far more bready day than I like to have, but we work with what we've got.

Today, I actually woke up and got out of bed at the right time, so I've prepared my breakfast to Nutrisystem spec, as well as packed my traditional snacks/lunch for work.  It's odd, for most of the last week or so, I've become used to just grabbing a South Beach snack bar for breakfast, which is just fine for when I'm in a hurry, but this feast of a piece of raisin bread, a Nutrisystem Chocolate Chip Scone and a small juice box just feels like a lot of food for breakfast.  Maybe it was the quart of water I drank before eating (I do try to drink a half-gallon with breakfast... and I just hit that mark, whoopee).

I spend all day going up and down stairs at work, especially at the location I switched to this week.  Even if I didn't need to go climbing about to do my job, there's about 2 flights between me and the restroom, and I try to drink at least 4 quarts over the course of my day.  You can imagine what this means for my relationship with the restroom.

When I was younger, meaning as recently as my teens (I'm not all that old, I have to remind myself) I always used to take the stairs two at a time.  At some point in my fatness, it became uncomfortable to continue to do so.  Yesterday, I realized I'd started up that habit on an occasional basis again.

Feels good, bro.

Experimental Log

So I decided I wanted to try writing today's entry on the iPad, since I'm planning on trying to use it for business travel. This will, of course, mean basically nothing to you, but I find it interesting how many of the Google apps and accounts I take for granted on my other devices are verboten on this thing. If I DO travel without a personal laptop, I'm going to have to find a way to upload photos taken with my DSLR. The Droid has great integration with my Picasa albums, so any pictures taken with it are always easy to upload.

Weight:   289.6 lbs
Body Fat: 39.3%
Water:    46.5%

I'm fairly happy with that, since the weekend was a net weight loss, despite a certain amount of drinking and improper eating that took place. I mostly behaved myself, but there were certainly some moments if bad behavior. For dinner last night, I ordered chinese pandit noodles and teriyaki chicken skewers. I tossed a little more than half of the noodles, so that was good? otherwise, I didn't exactly eat yesterday, except for a South Beach bar in the morning, and some Nutrisystem lunch bar. Back to the grind today, though.

I suppose I could get the SD card attachment, transfer photos from the DSLR to the iPad, and then transfer photos onto the micro SD card for the phone... I hate this already. I definitely need to buy a few more SD cards, on that related note, since I can fill up 4GB without really trying in an afternoon on that camera, and I don't want to burn iPad memory on picture warehousing. Thank god SD cards have become so cheap.

I keep trying to use my mouse on the damned thing, because I'm sitting next to my computer with it. Need to break myself of that at some point.

All right, have a good one, Fatheads.

Never Volunteer

... because there's always more to do than you think there is.  I was at work fairly late last night (around 8) and I realized while I was there that I would need to return this morning.

Weight:     288.2 lbs
Body Fat: 39%
Water:      46.7%

I'm comfortable with not calling this weight gain, as I was completely dehydrated yesterday morning, and that's why my weight was ridiculously low.  Yesterday, I ate a South Beach bar for breakfast, and I went out in the early afternoon for a half-sandwich and a half-salad from Panera.   For dinner, I came home and ordered a Jimmy Johns unwich (lettuce wrap) sans cheese, mayo or oil&vinegar.

I can't stop playing with my fondle-slab I picked up yesterday.  I bought an original flavor 64GB iPad, which means no camera or built-in 3G, but I also picked up a Verizon MiFi hotspot, which is about a third of the size of my cell phone, and works pretty amazingly well.  I'm starting out on the 1GB/month plan, and I only plan on keeping it activated when I'm traveling.  (hint, I'm traveling).

The travel is actually the big reason I bought the thing.  If I'm only traveling for a few days or a week for work, I travel with just the work laptop, but I don't use the work laptop for any of my personal business (blogging, reading my feedreader, Youtube, etc. etc.)  so when I travel for longer than a week, I always have to carry the extra laptop.  I have a 17" Dell that is just a fantastic machine as a desktop-replacement, but leaves something to be desired on the portability front.

Clearing security with both that and the work machine is always a bit of a chore, too (although I've yet to be the slowest person in line, fucking tourists).  I think that, somehow, having just the work laptop and the iPad will be a bit easier to deal with than the current setup.  I had to pick up a wireless keyboard for it, because the onboard one is alright for everything but actually typing long sentences.  The standard Apple case and the Verizon sleeve are both fairly worthless, so I'm looking in to an alternative right now.

I could ramble on about the damned thing, but I need to get going in to work.  Have a pleasant Sunday, Fatheads.

Whiskey You're The Devil

I had some fun last night, fatheads.  I went out, grabbed some fish appetizers for dinner, and proceeded to drink only whiskey/scotch for my entire evening.

Weight:     284.7 lbs
Body Fat: 37.7%
Water:      47.7%

Of course  as any of you serious whiskey drinkers might know, whiskey will give you serious cotton mouth/dehydration in the morning.  I just drank a G2 with a half-gallon of water back, and I'm feelling much more hydrated.  I had much fun last night, and had some fun times.  Went out with coworkers to a bar called Henry's downtown, where they have live music after 10.  The band wasn't bad, and it was an enjoyable experience.

I'm working today, but I volunteered for a split-shift, so I have some time until I said I'd be in.  I may go to the Verizon store and buy an iPad on the way to work, because they just dropped the price by 100 bucks.  Unfortunately, they only have original flavor, but it's cheap enough that I can probably justify (to myself, through deceit and subterfuge) upgrading to a 2 or a 3 at the appropriate time.

Why Is My Computer Molesting Itself?

Well, I'm in a foul mood this morning.  First of all, I had one of those wonderful incidents last night where Windows, having been told not to update at all, decided to go ahead and do whatever the fuck it wants to do.

Weight:     292.8 lbs
Body Fat: 40%
Water:      46%

Of course, it really doesn't matter all that much, usually.  Almost nothing ever changes, and I just get to be annoyed that I have to restart everything I'd had open/in-work the day before.  But then, there are these happy occasions where it DOES royally fuck something up.  Apparently, it blew up my iTunes library.

Now, I'm no n00b (those are zeroes, I have just found a reason to dislike my default formatting choices) to the travails of iTunes on Windows.  I've had to replace a library from a backup before, which iTunes creates every time it updates, and at some periodic other points.  However, I don't think iTunes updated last night, and  I must have had a setting checked wrong on the damned thing in recent memory, because the most recent update to my library I can find anywhere on the PC and its extended drives is from 2010-4-17.

There's no need to get into the "this is a great time to switch!" discussion here, either.  Once the music portion of the library passed 30 gigs, I was well beyond being prepared to either manage it myself or start to use a new library management program, and it passed 70 gigs at some point last year (over 100 with regularly-loaded movies).  I've looked into it on several of the other times something has killed my iTunes (death of a laptop, windows update, death of a hard drive, etc) and there's just not another piece of software that provides me with as much thought-free updating of my various iPods.

What really annoys me is that I'm going to have to sit down with the 160 GB iPod Classic (Dan Halen) and re-create a bunch of my playlists.  Finding and adding the half-dozen podcasts I'm currently listening to sounds like ever so much fun, too.  Updating Genius is probably going to take it all day while I'm at work...

Well, enough of that.  I had a fairly low-food day yesterday.  I ate a South Beach snack bar for breakfast, grabbed a California Roll from the cafeteria at work for lunch (almost all the 'sushi' they have in the fridge case has either cream cheese in it or some kind of mayo/sour cream on it, and all the salads have fried chicken or worse in them), and I had an afternoon snack of Nutrisystem Zesty Herb Snack Mix.  For dinner, I ate the leftover half of a small artichoke hearts, steak, and feta pizza leftover from Sunday.

I fully intend to pack a lunch and snacks for today, but now, I must adjourn to the bathroom, where the miracle of razors and showers can happen.

G'day, Fatheads.

1 Year of Fatness

I realized tonight that tomorrow morning, March 22nd, is the one year anniversary of my first posting on this little monstrosity.  Tonight, I'm setting up a "Then and Now" bit of things.

Weight: 367 lbs

I started this blog weighing in at 367 lbs, as of today, a few weeks before I'd started the blog, I'd weighed in at about 380, but had decided to put off starting the blog for a short period as a result.  Without sorting through the fossil records, I achieved a low weight in the last year of about 287 lbs, and today, I weigh:

Weight:     295.4 lbs
Body Fat: 40.5%
Water:      45.6%

I'm down about 72 lbs from this time last year.  Most of that weight was lost in the first 3 months of the program, but I mostly kept it off, with an up-down of around 20-30 lbs during the worst period, and more recently a fluctuation ranging around 8-10 lbs, but trending downwards.  Nutrisystem's a good program that has worked for me, and I intend to keep using it to finish what I've started.

I would like to have lost more weight last year, obviously, but I'm not unhappy with being able to lose that much and pretty much keep it off.  I'm especially happy with the fact that my fluctuations when I go off the rails are decreasing.  If I can have a repeat performance of last year this year, I may very well  be able to enter the 3rd year of this part of my life saying that I just need to maintain my weight until I die.

Of course, one would be remiss to discuss the last year without mentioning the worst part: the 6 months of unemployment (preceded by 3+2 months of WARN time where I wasn't working the previous year) without a serious prospect of a new job.  It wasn't until late June of last year that I even had a callback from an employer, and by the end of July, I had a job I was going to start in the early fall.  As you know, I spent most of my day every day (10+ hours) looking for work online or calling whatever contacts I could scrounge up.  There are quite literally thousands of engineers right now with my skillset and experience or better looking for the same jobs I was looking for.  It's become a much better climate for my kind, the rare wild AE, but thousands are still unemployed, underemployed, or dead.

You find meaning in some banal activity like trying to improve yourself and bragging about it on the internet, and you muddle through your days.  We waste what little cash reserve we might have on trifles and trips where we sleep in our cars.  I learned quite a bit about myself, went a little bit more crazy than I was before, and made some minor improvements in myself during that period, so I'm OK with calling it a wash.  My career's back on track, I like my car and my apartment, and I love the city I'm in.

It's been a good year, Fatheads, and this next year should be much better.

Fatass, out.

Tourism Weekend

Well, Fatheads, it's been a very exciting weekend here down in Charleston.  I apparently took about 2 gigs worth of pictures while my brother was visiting, and much exciting food and drink was consumed as a part of our tourist experience.

Weight:     298.4 lbs
Body Fat: 41.4%
Water:      44.9%

But now, the weekend is over, and it's time to assess the damage.  I'm up about 10 lbs from Friday, although much of that is almost certainly water weight.  We had a great time checking out the many exciting restaurants the city has to offer, as well as imbibing at what might be called an unhealthy level by some, but I would refer to as a properly robust level.

This is a digital photograph of someone painting a building.  Unfortunately, there exists no proper photograph of the fantastic meals we ate, which encompassed the entirety of exciting food options from the city.  Several meals of seafood, along with one of our more exciting pizza joints here in town.

Today, it's back to the typical foods:  South Beach snack bar for breakfast, then typical snacks/lunch during the day at work.   What little remains of the "guest food" is either going in to work with me today or it's going in the trash.  I need to keep some snacks around for poker night, but I can ignore that stuff if it's shoved away in a drawer.  My feet are beat to hell from some of the walking this weekend (the shoes I wore Saturday night were definitely not intended for either walking or stumbling whatever distance was involved) so I'm probably going to try and take it easy on my feet for a few days, after which I'll get back on the elliptical to punish my horrible body for my sins.

In somewhat similar news, the brother just got one of the new fondle-slabs and has been showing it off this weekend, giving me a desire to own one of my very own.  I'm thinking that, after I do my taxes, I'll look at possibly buying one.  My typical buying pattern for Apple products is to wait until about 4-6 months, minimum, after the version I want comes out and just buy a refurb, but I may decided to break that pattern for the touchiness.  I'm happy with my current Dell monstrosity  of a laptop, so I don't really need a new primary computing device, and I have some problems with the idea of buying a not-entire-new-computer for a price higher than that of my last new main computer, but screw it.  We wants it.

Experience terror.  Those are the most lifeless, zombified eyes I've ever seen.  Looking at them, one can't help but feel that the deep ones are reaching out for the minds and souls of the innocent YouTube user, carelessly meandering the net, looking only to understand a strange new meme.  There can be no help for any of us now.  The God is dead, and the old ones have come, all that can be hoped for is to be eaten first before we are driven to self-immolating insanity by the ones to whom we are as ants.  IA IA! Cthulu Ftagn!

Here, an autotune palate cleanser.  I'm so sorry to have done that to any of you so early in the morning, I know I won't be the same ever again.

Well, I'm off to the shower and then work, after which I need to take the bro to the airport.

Keep the faith, Fatheads, we'll get there.

Weekend Happy Times

I've got family visiting this weekend, and it's been an excuse for me to spend this whole week cleaning and reorganizing my apartment.  I just walked out of my bathroom last night, after having finished, and said: "holy shit, it looks like an actual adult lives here".

Weight:     289.6 lbs
Body Fat: 39.4%
Water:      46.4%

Albeit a somewhat nerdy, possibly immature adult (the game consoles in multiple rooms of the house and art deco-style anti-cylon propaganda posters and "see the verse" travel posters on the walls give it away, not to mention the two Halo Legendary Edition [3 and reach]) but still, an adult.  I don't think my last apartment ever achieved this level of organization.  Possibly cleanliness, but definitely not organization.

At any rate, it's Friday, so small meals only, and no meat.  I'll basically be grabbing South Beach and Nutrisystem bars for breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack, and heading out to dinner with the family when they arrive.

Also, I think I have a new favorite meme, and this is my new favorite picture from it:

Originally seen here.

I won't be posting/getting weighed over the weekend.  Company means I'll be eating out for most meals and doing some amount of drinking (there's a fresh Cornelius keg of Sam Adams in the kegerator).   Have a safe and enjoyable weekend, and don't do anything Gary Busey wouldn't do.

That's all I've got, Fatheads.

In other words:  it's another quickie for today.  I will pause briefly in my rush to say I feel a bit dehydrated this morning, so weight may be a pound or two low.  I ate according to the plan yesterday, but had a chicken Caesar salad for dinner last night, in accordance with the prophecy.

See? Told You

...that there'd be a new real post!

Weight:     294 lbs

Water:      45.6%

It's been a busy week so far, what with generally getting out of bed in something of a tardy fashion and then having too much to do when I get home.  I haven't exactly had a whole lot of time for exercise, so I haven't.

I've been keeping myself good so far this workweek, although I've been feeding a slight peanut addiction as well as grabbing delivery for dinner both Monday and last night.  Monday, I had a Jimmy Johns "Unwich" (no bread, only lettuce) that their website clocked at about 330 calories after I told them to hold the oil, mayo and cheese.  Last night, I ordered some Chinese food: chicken teriyaki skewers and some steamed dumplings.  I needed the dumplings to push it over the delivery minimum cost, but I only ate a few of them, and didn't eat the actual dough part of most of the ones I did eat.

I've been taking food with me to work in accordance with the diet plan: morning snack of an apple and yogurt, Nutrisystem lunch with either a piece of fruit or some vegetables, and an afternoon Nutrisystem Snack.  I forgot a morning snack the other day, and the only remotely healthy thing in the machine was peanuts, which kind of kick-started my current peanut kick.  I'm almost out of the jar of them I bought at the grocery store the other day, we'll see if I decide to buy more.

For Breakfast today, I'm having an egg over hard (protein), a slice of raisin bread toast (carbohydrate) and a juice box (fruit) along with my Nutrisystem Nutriflakes Cereal.

That's the news from the South, where it's been getting into the 70s every day for about the last week, and it's been sunny every afternoon for the same period.  Suck it, Yankees.

Sunday Spring Cleaning

Good Morning, Fatheads!  I had a pleasant evening of video games and some film watching last night con amigo, during which I had pizza for dinner with one beer, and two (rather hefty) jack & diets.

Weight:     291.6 lbs
Body Fat: 40.3%
Water:      45.7%

I also drank about a gallon of water during the experience, so as not to become  dehydrated.  Yesterday, I ended up eating a Nutrisystem breakfast bar on my way to work, an apple and a Nutrisystem Trail Mix Bar for lunch, and nothing else until I ordered a large thin crust pizza for dinner.

The plan for today is to do laundry and finally clean the apartment up from the debris that was a part of both leaving for Seattle and returning home from Seattle.  I also intend to go to church, but this lost hour is fucking with my head (I completely ignored my 9:30 alarm for about an hour this morning).  Ben Franklin, you can suck a dick.

I'm going to make myself take the time to walk to mass later, it's only about a mile and a half,  and it's a pretty walk (I'll take the camera).

Now, back to doing laundry and cleaning.

No Food and Exercising ISN'T Anorexia

I'm far too fat to be anorexic, besides, I ate an apple this morning and a South Beach snack bar for lunch.

Calories Burned: 523
Max Heart Rate: 171
Avg Heart Rate: 157

And look, my heart rate was a bit lower than and my exercise time was a bit half of what they were yesterday!  In summary: I'm kind of tired, and rather hungry.  As those of you who follow the Twitter may know, I ordered dinner to be delivered after I had time to workout and shower, so I could enjoy it thoroughly.

Mad Men from the Netflix is an excellent exercise companion, by the way.  I watch it with subtitles and wear my headphones, through which I listen to a melange of techno, club anthems, pop and rap.  I may switch it up a bit in the near future, as Shuffle has been picking up too many mellow things from the current playlist.  Maybe that will make a good Sunday project.

[shower/dinner break]

Dinner arrived shortly after I got dressed, and I had some calamari, some fried flounder and some fried shrimp.  It was a very good meal, and I look forward to an exciting day of work tomorrow.  I'm going to go rehydrate a bit more, watch some Mad Men, then go to bed.

G'night, Fatheads.

I can't wait for someone to tell me that dropping weight that fast is unhealthy.  Fortunately, I have this handy record of exactly how much I've been eating and exactly how much I've been working out, neither of which has been excessive, so I'm just proud of my fat ass instead of being worried.

It's FRIDAY!  And that means something to people who aren't scheduled for Saturday.  Well, for me it means no meat and fasting.  I know you don't have to for every Friday in Lent, but it's something I've gotten in the habit of doing.  Fasting, as currently defined by the church, means only eating one full meal over the course of the day, but you can have 2 very small meals as well.  I only mention it so that no one will be confused when I say what I'm eating today.

I'll probably just have an apple for breakfast and take 2 with me to work, and then do the fried fish thing for dinner.  But I''m running late, so it's time to vamoose... I actually ran out of time to eat an apple before going to work, so I'm just taking 2 with me.

G'day, Fatheads.
